Civil engineering salary in India

Salary deciding factor in government and Private sector

Salary will depend upon degree and college where you are studying. For instance, a student who did graduation from IIT will get higher salary than other person who completed graduation from regional college or state university. Good salary compensation in top private companies will depend upon the college reputation and marks you have scored.
On the other hand salary in government sector is almost fixed for all civil engineers whether you did graduation from IIT or any other state college, and compensation will be paid as per the government rules and regulations. To get a job in the government sector, one has to pass the interview followed by a written examination.

Will government sector pay you more salary than Private Sector?

It is a debatable question, but many of people will give edge to private sector over government sector.  Private companies will pay civil engineer more salary,  because private companies decides salary and packages as per current market scenario, whereas government sector sets pay scale as per suggestion received from pay commission.

    1. Its your decision, but i would say evaluate the job opportunity you got (i.e. PWD). Consider these points before deciding anything Salary, location, personal priorities, interest and future growth.

Although if you willing to go for administration services (IAS, IES, IPS)in future then govt. job is best as you can prepare along with govt. job

    1. Hi Muhilan,

As you have not mentioned about your engineering background. Any ways, if you planning to do MS in construction management then you have to think twice as construction industry will pay you more but this is not 10 to 5 job.
However most of the construction jobs are available in Gulf countries if you are looking for higher salary.
Any ways, It is better to get involved yourself into design field which not only pay you higher salary but comfortable job environment.

      Best of Luck

    3. Hi Muhilan,

MS in Civil engineering definitely open many doors if you do it from any good foreign university. Most of the design and construction companies hire Engineers on regular basis. Roughly you will get around 12 to 15 lacs initially in any Indian company but working abroad will help you to earn good money.

      After B.tech you are eligible to get job in any field. Moreover if you plan higher study then you will have lots of options to choose;
      1. Mtech - GATE

    1. Hi,

It’s your decision which horse you want to ride. Go for Govt. job as Pvt. Sector is not a butter cake, you hv to work really hard to achieve what you want. Other hand, govt job is rather easy and gives you so much spare time to be with your designing love.

You may also start consultancy firm working in govt sector and prepare for higher level of govt exam like IES and IAS working with govt.

I want to get some good job in a well known infrastructure company to get some experience and capital to later start something of my own. I'm planning to do an MS in const. Management or transportation or town planning. Would I get a good placement if I return back to india right after my graduation?

    1. Why Not, Best sectors which offers maximum job opportunities. If you have set your mind for MS in construction management then its ok. Otherwise you can do 2 years course from NICMAR which is equally good.

Definitely construction management (MS) will give you edge to apply for top construction/infrastructure companies. However It is recommended to give importance to university which has great on campus placement record. Therefore understand this matrix before taking an admission in any university abroad.

    1. Why are you keen to complete engineering diploma in age of 37. I will recommend diploma to people who are already in Construction field, you will not get any benefit because you have to start from basic and anyhow if you will get a job then how much a company can offer 5000 or 10000.
Fresher degree people are forced to work in Rs.5000 initially. So what is the future of diploma engineer???

I will only recommend diploma, if you are interested to start own construction company/firm.

Apart from the above, its your decision.

my aim is M.tech in structural engineer and then IAS.

Second, best way to get a job in pvt company if you dont want to draw money from parents, but keep yourself updated for govt examination.
Tip : Start working as designer in any company because it will offer you handsome package and ample time to study for govt job.

Go for Regular BE/Btech course and you get education loan for studies.

Moreover safety diploma with construction education will give your career a boost.

    2. How to get an entry into civil engg designing field after having sufficient site on field knowledge and rough idea of autocaad

    1. CAD center is the best institute in india for AutoCAD training to the best of my knowledge. Getting entry into design field is rather tough if you are working at site. An engineer must work with architect or structure designer to declare him a designer.

You can become proficient in AutoCAD while working with them as “Practice makes a man perfect”

  49. Sir,
There is so many CAD centre in india. I dont know which one i should opt. Before stepping into site engineering job im planning to do total survey station course and autocaad.I dont kno whether im going in right , direction or not but i really want to learn this two stuffs.
I have found the institute for total station surveying course but still doubtful about CAD institute , bcoz of so many institute by CAD name. Is Kollam CAD institute good? If not then which one i shuld prefer?
Your advice is very important to me bcuz i ll be making my decision by keeping your suggestions in my mind..

Getting job in foreign countries like US, UK and other European country is difficult unless you have few professional higher degrees like MBA, Mtech and MS. Best way to complete your Btech first and then pursue higher education from any foreign university, it will increase your chance to get a job in top countries.

  63. Dear Mr. Rajaditya Singh ,
Civil Engineers in India have a less value in socially & salary wise . Entry level Software Engineers earn more than 5+years experience Civil Engineer . In India Construction Industry is not united as compare to other Engineering streams , Here mostly companies (Except few Companies ) Civil Engineer treated as Mason Engineer . Full rights But less money . Corruption in Civil Engineering work so much in India , one example is Common wealth Game 2010 Delhi . In that work What is quality & safety . Now due to market sinking construction sector is down .In this Industry payments are already less & now coming lesser as compare to other engineering streams . Worst Scenario , Its true that if you want money by service in private sector don't do Civil Engineering . It's pay less that's real fact. Am I right ????

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Certainly you raised a good point here but scenario you talking about software engineer is not right. no. of software engineers are forced to work in just 3 to 5k or remain employed after passing out from college.

But there is rather easy for civil engineer to get a job once he is out from college. However construction business is not performing good. So don't think bad about it as it is core sector and surely produce no. of opportunities in coming year but someone should not blame civil engineering.
We have to balance demand and supply gap and will have to provide quality education rather than opening new engineering college every year without producing jobs.

      Delete
    2. Dear Mr. Rajaditya Singh ,
The reason for people not taking up civil engineering jobs in India is only the pay. No matter how many more colleges, they build, good engineers will still be few. This absolutely has nothing to do with qualification or technical expoertise which India has in abundance. It pure political corruption and nothing else. Look at the municipal/ corrporation maintained roads and compare with toll regulated roads (owned operated and transfered) by private operators. the quality and maintenance is for all to see. A road if laid properly can easily last 2 - 3 monsoons.Socially Civil Engineering is only side do a lot of things for society but what is the image of civil engineers in India is corrupted , less quality & safety , less salaries . I am stating this issues with realities . Am I right ???

  73. Hi sir, i am Parthiban , civil engg graduate (part time) passed out in 2005 after 3 yrs full time diploma passed out in 1999. After my diploma , i started my career with a private construction company as field site engineer and i have been still working in private sectors as field site engineer/project engineer. Majority of my experience in buildings and few years in road/infrastructure. i have worked both in india and middle east and currently i am employed in Muscat. i am being paid about 12 lacs per annum but i am not satisfied with current job as the company's reputation is poor in civil business here. So, i am really afraid if i keep doing this job i would get lost in the job industry in future as there is no scope here to improve my knowledge and capabilities.Hence , i am thinking to either change the company here itself or pursue ME/M-Tech in india in design field and take up a job as a designer. Is it a good idea to switch the line after i came this far in field job. Or should i pursue MTech -construction management which is still in line with my experience and then look for better companies. Please advise, sir.

    1. I can understand your problem. Best way to continue or job unless you don't find good one.
Going for Mtech full time is not advisable as you earning good as far as Indian Pay scale is concerned. Better to change a job there in good company and pursue construction management course from some reputed institute like NICMAR. It will not only enhance the knowledge but create good opportunity in future to acquire a higher paying job.

To improve designing skill in that stage is not right as you will not get best out of it. Moreover you don't have design experience and after getting a design proficiency, you will have to start as a fresher.

    1. Personally I wud suggest you to do job than business. First you should learn A,B,C,D of professional life and gain some experience before diving into business.
Second, Dubai is nice option if you looking for higher salary after your post graduation. But remember there is always slim chance to get the same salary if you relocate to India after spending few years in Gulf countries.

Therefore, It is always preferred to get a job in India and create an option to go abroad from here as it will help you in future to evaluate your profile in Indian manner by prospective employer and can offer you handsome salary on basis of Indian Knowledge and experience.

Lastly, Don't target money initially dear, own country is far better than other country if you want to live life peaceful.

      Thanks

First of all I would like to express my gratitude for your continued public service in giving advice to lost souls and fledglings such as myself. Now back to business, even though i'm almost done with my civil engg degree, I have struggled with the technical aspect mainly strucutural analysis. I have a CGPA of around 6.5, am very fluent in english, hindi and intermediate in spanish. I have great people's skill and am a team player. Since my dad is a diplomat, I have lived abroad for the majority of my life only having spent around 7 years in India. I even finished my schooling from abroad. I don't want to study anymore, I want to work and get experience as experience is very vital for this job. I have basic design skills in software such as MATLAB, ABAQUS and AUTOCAD. After reading one of your article's I decided on project management or construction however I don't want to study more so do you recommend me doing MS in project mgmnt or should I acquire those skills through experience? I also dont mind working in the gulf as location is no issue for me and pay is better there than in India. Also sir whenever I search for jobs in the gulf they always most of the time ask for experience so can you please explain the freshers scene in the gulf for Indians?

    Best regards

Not to worry about anything. Just choose subject which u like most in Mtech. It is always better to keep yourself up to date as far as study is concerned. If you studying at home for gate, no problem..carry on. However design related subjects are ideal for girls and getting experience in software field will give additional advantage in future.
Placement will depend on college reputation therefore score good in gate and surely will get selected through campus placement.

  117. i think ur view that govt pays less salary is wrong .....for freshers Bureau if Indian Standard pay 52000 gross salary ,,,, ISRO pays 36000 pm excluding other amenities,,,,,and Oiling PSU's have package tht range from 5.5 to 8 lacks ....even HAL pays in the same scale .......moreover govt companies will giving housing and other perks which when taken into account will exceed wht private sector pay as "PACKAGES" ,,,,,,,,,,,, and these companies are not as corrupt as other govt sectors are ............its true in state govt owned companies pay is less

  124. Hi
I completed my btech civil in 2012 and then I worked at site in small construction company for about 18 months..last week I quit the job as I was frustrated with the unorganised work culture , unpleasant working environment there...
I now need the guidance to switch my profile from site work to office job...I am well aware of softwares like autocad and primavera..
Or companies like L&T , punj Lloyd , GMR etc has same working environment ?? Should I work in small company for some years and with the gain of experience try for these bigger brands??
Or going for ME civil Engineering from Australia and settle there is a good option?? What's the scope there for civil engineers ??

    1. Ya it may count. Simple script in private companies hiring, they want candidate who are working. But in your case, you left job and staying at home (Negative point). Apart from the above, experience will count and search job at Naukri.com

    1. Hi Rahul,
If it is a construction management then try NICMAR and if you willing to do masters from foreign universities then it would be any European and American universities.
